The Art of Vacuuming
Dirt kills! tracked in soil is the number one destroyer of carpets. You can walk on a clean nylon carpet forever and it will continue to look and perform like new. But as soon as that same carpet becomes soiled, it will start to age.
Carpeting is made to hide soil but its presence will cause damage. Soil hinders the carpet's natural resilience (the ability to bounce back) allowing the carpet yarns to become distorted. Fine gritty soil will actually scratch the fibers when walked on, causing the carpets to look dull.
Regular maintenance vacuuming is the main way to keep a carpet looking like new. Here are some pointers for making the most of your vacuuming:
- Vacuuming Regularly. Schedule a weekly overall vacuuming and if possible vacuum more often in high traffic areas.
- Focus on Soil Areas. When you are vacuuming feel free to "fly over" the areas of carpet that are rarely walked on. Focus your time and energy on the major traffic areas and any entry from hard surface areas onto the carpet. Carpet manufacturers recommend that you go over these areas slowly 3 to 5 times. Embedded soil take more work to remove than surface dust.
- Empty Vacuum Bag Frequently. Studies have found that a vacuum cleaner's efficiency is reduced by at least 50% as soon as the waste bag becomes 1/2 - 2/3 full.
Tips
Ways to maintain the cleanliness and appearance of your carpets:
- Keep the exterior entrance to your home free of dirt
- Sweep porch or decks on a regular basis
- Be sure to keep exterior mat at every door and clean them periodically
- Use area rugs in high traffic paths
- Use trays for food/beverage to help prevent spills from getting on your carpet
- Take your shoes off at the door and/or use indoor only shoes or slippers.

Vacuuming isn't high on the list of what we "can't wait to do today". But when you are tempted to put it off, think about how much your carpet fibers would benefit from a vacuum massage. If you can keep those fibers clean and happy, they will look good and last for a long time.

You can do a lot to keep your carpets free of unsightly spots and spills between regular professional maintenance cleanings.
General Spot Cleaning Guidelines:
- Don't scrub - BLOT
- Work spot from the outside - in
- Be patient
- When in doubt, call me for advise
There are 3 types of spots and spills: 1. dry spills (dirt, ashes, sawdust etc.) 2. water based spills 3. oil & grease spots
1. Dry spills require a very thorough dry vacuuming. If possible, use only the end of the hose attachment from a vacuum to avoid working the spill deeper into the carpet fibers. If the spot remains, apply a water based carpet spotter (like JRP's spot out) to a white cotton towel and gently blot (don't scrub) the area from the outside inward. If the spot remains, treat it as a dried water based spill.
2. Water-Based spills: For fresh spills quickly place cotton towel(s) on top of the spill to absorb as much as possible. Then follow the procedures for dried spills.
For dried spills liberally dampen the area with warm water, but don't flood it! Press cotton towel(s) to the spot to absorb the moisture. Repeat this rinsing process. If a spot remains dampen the area again, apply a water based carpet spotter and blot. Repeat as necessary.
3. Oil & Grease spots do not respond well to water - based detergents. A volatile dry solvent, such as odorless mineral spirits (OMS) will be necessary. It is available in the paint dept. of any hardware store. Do not over apply! Dry solvents penetrate quickly. Apply the OMS to a white cotton towel - not the carpet. Blot, working from the outside inward. Continue until the spot no longer transfers to the towel.
Some spills can result in permanent stains. Please call me if you have any questions.
